When is a mango ripe?

If you buy a mango with an EAT ME label on it, you can eat it straight away. The fruits are not ripe when they arrive in the Netherlands. They ripen in special ripening chambers, under the watchful eye of our ripening experts. So all you have to do when you buy a mango is make sure it has the purple EAT ME label. Then you can be certain of enjoying the best. And there's no need to wait!

Do you still want to check? Hold the mango in your palm and feel it carefully. Does the flesh yield a little? Then your mango is ripe. Be careful not to squeeze the mango. This could damage the fruit and bruising will appear after a few days.

Recipes with mango

Mango offers so much versatility in the kitchen. For a really easy option, just add mango to your yoghurt. But if you feel like pushing your culinary boundaries, why not put a mango and carrot soup on the menu?


Preparing a ready-to-eat mango is simplicity itself: slice the flesh away on both sides of the stone, then slice the flesh into strips or cubes. Do not cut through the skin. Where do mangoes come from?

Mangoes come from various regions, such as South America and West Africa. They grow on trees, which bear fruit after 4 to 6 years. First flowers bloom on the tree, then the fruits appear. Older mango trees are pruned at the start of each cropping cycle.

The harvest season lasts approximately 3 months. Growers know precisely when to harvest the mangoes. They measure a number of values, such as the sugar content, to assess whether the fruits are ready to harvest. Our growers actually harvest 2 weeks later than usual. As a result, the sugar content in the fruit is higher giving the mango an even more delicious taste.

How sustainable are mangoes?

You can rest assured that our mangoes are grown responsibly. By working with producers in the countries of origin we contribute to their living conditions. For example, the employees in Ivory Coast are provided with free meals. Nutritious food, so we also make them aware of the importance of a varied diet. And in the Dominican Republic we turned Covid-19 into a positive way of giving employees (and their family members) access to acute medical care.
