Salak has a shiny reddish-brown scaly skin. The outside of the fruit, which is also known as snake fruit, looks rough and tough but the skin is thin and very easy to peel. Salak has about the size of a mature fig and is recognised by its pointy ends. The flesh is yellow-white to pink and has a crispy apple-like texture, it is juicy and has a sweet and sour taste. There are big, flat inedible seeds in the middle of the fruit.
